Tips for making your home attractive to a purchaser

  • Nothing puts people off more than dirt - so have a spring clean. And don't forget the floors and work surfaces.
  • Now is the time to throw away all that junk which makes your rooms look cluttered and small.
  • Clean your windows inside and out so when the sun shines your home sparkles.
  • Freshen your home to remove pet odours - but use something like a vanilla candle not a pungent chemical smell.
  • Transform your main room by replacing that old carpet - or add a new rug.
  • Repaint the walls in light or neutral colours to open up the rooms.
  • Look round and do those small repairs - it will make your home look well cared for.
  • Create a warm, welcoming impression for evening visits with small lamps or sidelights.
  • Banish the cats and dogs - if you can.
  • Try and avoid visits at meal time, when cooking smells will detract.
  • Children - can a neighbour look after them?
  • Be friendly but not too keen - it looks desperate.
